Making A Difference
The first time I met Wilma she was in terrible pain from arterial ulcers. She was scheduled for bilateral below the knee amputations the following week. Her surgeon asked if I’d bring my arterial pump for her to trial, as a last attempt to save her limbs. He had heard about it from a colleague at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN.
The family was very supportive and Wilma was dedicated to using the device as prescribed. The first week she experienced relief from her debilitating rest pain. She could finally sleep. The amputations were canceled. I took monthly photos of her progress, and the results were truly amazing. It was obvious to everyone – this device was significantly altering the progression of disease. She continued to use the pump for months, and her wounds completely healed.
Wilma passed several years later. I needed to pick up the pump from Wilma’s daughter in rural Minnesota. Her daughter said “thank you for giving me my mom back.” It was a defining moment for me. Sure, I wasn’t going to prevent all the amputations everywhere. But it’s kinda like the Starfish Story. It made a difference to that one.
Thanks for reading about my journey. With your help, we can make a difference.
